SAP announced it's acquiring Prior Labs — the Freiburg team behind TabPFN — for over €1B, with a pledge to invest €1B more over four years to build Europe's frontier AI research lab.
This is easy to dismiss as corporate AI washing. But I think it's more interesting than that.
TabPFN is genuinely novel. It's a foundation model for tabular data — the kind that powers 90% of real business intelligence. Most frontier AI research focuses on text and vision. Tabular AI has been mostly ignored at scale.
SAP has the distribution. They touch the financial and operational data of thousands of large enterprises. If you can train a frontier model on tabular data and deploy it across that footprint, you have something most LLM companies don't: proprietary data at enterprise scale.
The €1B commitment also signals this isn't a bolt-on acquisition. This is a long-term infrastructure bet on European AI sovereignty.
Whether it executes is a different question. Enterprise AI projects are famously where ambition goes to become roadmap slides.
But the thesis is sound.
